Preparing a standard solution
A/L Chemistry · G.C.E. Advanced Level · Grades 12–13
Aim
To prepare a standard solution of a known concentration.
Apparatus
- An analytical balance
- A volumetric flask (100/250/500 cm³)
- Distilled water and a funnel
Method
- Calculate the mass needed, m = c × V × M.
- Weigh the solid accurately and dissolve it in a beaker.
- Transfer to the flask, rinsing the beaker into it.
- Make up to the mark with water and mix well.
Conclusion
Actual concentration = mass weighed ÷ (M × V). If the weighing error is tiny the solution can be used as a standard solution.
